Characteristics of Rubbers for Roller Applications

Updated: May 13, 2022

Rubber components have attractive qualities due to their molecular structure. Rubbers are amorphous polymers with high elasticity. They are made by crosslinking long polymer chains into amorphous structures. This structure enables them to flex and absorb energy when subjected to a load without sustaining permanent damage. Some foremost properties of rubbers are outlined below.

Hardness:

The ability of a material to resist localized surface deformation is referred to as hardness. The tougher the rubber roller’s surface is, the more difficult it is to pierce, deform, or compress it. The rubber roller must be able to absorb part of the force or energy so that the object being handled is not harmed. Harder is not always better. The Shore hardness scale is most typically used to describe rubber hardness. A durometer gauge or instrument is used to determine the hardness of the material (from 0 -to 100).

Abrasion Resistance :

Abrasion resistance refers to the rubber surface’s capacity to tolerate the gradual loss of material by mechanical action. There are two types of impingement abrasion: sliding and impingement abrasion. When a soft and hard substance slides or rubs against one another, with or without impurities between the surfaces, sliding occurs. Impingement abrasion, on the other hand, occurs when particles collide with the surface and cause erosion

Impact Resistance:

Impact resistance, also known as impact strength or impact toughness, is a material’s ability to withstand rapid forces or loads. Due to its natural ability to take elastic deformation, rubber is one of the greatest materials that exhibit this feature. They can deform to absorb shock and then return to their original shape while releasing energy all through the material’s body.

Compression Set: When compressed, some rubber compositions tend to stay compressed or distorted after the load is removed. This is known as a compression set, and it manifests itself as a reduction in the thickness of a rubber liner. The loss of resilience following prolonged elastic deformation is also known as a compression set. The compression set is influenced by a variety of factors such as load application timespan, operating temperature, and rubber compound composition.

Tear Strength: This is the rubber lining’s ability to withstand the application of tensile forces, which tend to rip the material apart and propagate the tear throughout the material’s body. Tear propagation can change based on how the force is applied and the material’s microscopic structure. Tear strength and abrasion resistance are sometimes linked. Materials with high abrasion resistance

are likely to have high tear strength.

Low-Temperature Toughness: Rubber Changes its mechanical properties when cooled. Rubber loses a substantial percentage of elasticity, causing it to stiffen and become slightly to moderately brittle. Because this process is physical rather than chemical, it can be reversed. However, in this brittle state, the material is prone to tears or fractures, which can quickly spread when the rubber contracts. The type of rubber compound determines low-temperature resistance, which can be enhanced -Temperature Toughness

Chemical and Water Resistance: Aside from the content and structure of the main polymer chain, certain functional groups are found throughout the molecule that binds with other functional groups within the chain. This results in the rubber’s amorphous molecular structure. By interacting with the functional groups on the elastomer chain, acids, alkalis, organic solvents, and water can destroy the rubber complex. Different varieties of rubber

have different chemical preferences for different chemical groups.
